Polatrak DC II™
Topside Drop Cell for Cathodic Protection Survey

 by Deepwater Corrosion Services

The standard proximity probe for a topside drop cell cathodic
protection survey. Comes with up to 1500 ft of cable.

DC-II shown with extended length cable and reel. DC-II shown with the standard 250 ft. cable reel.

Product Overview

The Deepwater Polatrak DC-II is the first and only twin element portable reference electrode of its kind. The twin elements provide on-board calibration, eliminating the possibility of topside survey inaccuracies.

The DC-II is used to survey more offshore structures worldwide than any other portable drop cell-style cathodic protection probe, and it has been specified by a large number of operators as the only acceptable choice of equipment. The evolution of this instrument over its 15 years has been largely based on the assumption that responsible asset management begins with accurate cathodic protection testing.

Ease of use, and most importantly, accuracy, are of chief importance to the offshore CP technician. The DC II boasts guaranteed accuracy +/- 5 mV. Trips offshore are expensive, and there is no need to repeat a mobilization due to faulty equipment.

The rugged thermoplastic housing with tapered cone prevents snagging. The DC-II is available with extra-long cable and high capacity cable reel with up to 1500 ft. of test cable (standard model shown with 250 ft. (75 m) of cable).

Key Design Features

  1. Guaranteed accuracy:  Many common sources for error are eliminated with the twin element configuration. The dual silver / silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) electrodes provide internal redundancy and on-line calibration, allowing the probe to be reliably tested and readings verified in the field.

  2. Extremely rugged:  The DC II has been used on more offshore corrosion surveys for offshore structures than any other drop cell (dip cell).

  3. Price competitive:  The DC-II costs about the same as old-fashioned single element electrodes. Readings can be obtained with a simple dc voltmeter.

Applications

  • Platform and riser surveys.
  • As remote for multiple electrode surveys.
  • Drill rigs & FPSO surveys.
  • Ballast & water tank surveys.
  • Jetty and dock surveys.

The drop cell is interrogated by a simple voltmeter.

Deep C Meter 3000 kit components

The DC-II comes standard with a reel and 250 ft. (75 m) of cable standard. Additional cable up to 1000 ft is available (shown on the right hand side of the image).
The DC-II requires a voltmeter to be read in the field. Volt-meters are not provided with a standard drop cell kit. They are available for an additional fee with all necessary cables.
The DC-II also requires a zinc calibration coupon (not supplied). This allows the technician to verify the drop cell's readings offshore. Coupons are available separately.
