Cygnus 4 General Purpose Thickness Gauge
Digital, Ultrasonic Multiple Echo

Measures thickness to determine wastage or corrosion --
accurately, quickly and without removing surface coatings.

Overview | Cygnus 1 Heavy Duty | Cygnus 1 Intrinsically Safe | Cygnus 1 Underwater | Cygnus 2 Hands Free |
Cygnus 3 Data Logger | Cygnus 4 General Purpose | Cygnus Mini ROV | Cygnus Dedicated ROV

Description

The Cygnus 4 is a compact, general purpose Ultrasonic Thickness gauge using Cygnus Multiple Echo technology. It is suitable for use in most hand-held industrial or shipping applications. The LCD display is easily read outdoors, and has a backlight for use in dark areas. The Cygnus 4 is supplied ready to use as a complete kit in a protective carry case.

Benefits

  • Multiple echo, single-crystal Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge.
  • Coatings do not have to be removed - measures only the metal thickness.
  • Accepted by major classification societies.
  • No grinding - minimum surface preparation.
  • Measures on rough corroded surfaces.
  • Speed, accuracy and reliability.
  • No false readings - repeatable results.
  • Easy to use - minimum operator training.
  • Greatly reduced inspection time and cost.
  • Measures on metals and some other materials.

Applications
  • Metal thickness monitoring on cranes, marine structures and conveying systems.
  • Corrosion checks on ships' shell plates, bulkheads and structures.
  • Metal thickness safety checks on steam and pressurized water systems, transportable gas containers and compressed air systems.
  • Systematic wall thickness and corrosion monitoring of storage tanks and process vessels.
  • Quality assurance metal thickness checks.
  • Maintenance and safety checks on bridges and street lighting columns.

Cygnus Multiple Echo Technology

With multiple echo technology, readings are taken by measuring the time delay between any three consecutive backwall echoes. The time T1 (for coating thickness) is ignored. The times T2 and T3 are equal to the time that it takes for sound to travel through the metal. Only by looking at three echoes can the measurements be made for the metal thickness, where T2 = T3.

Features
  • Backlit digital display for easy viewing from bright sunlight to complete darkness.
  • Rugged construction - shock proof - protected to IP65 (NEMA-4).
  • Stable calibration - linear accuracy - no zero adjustment.
  • Self verification of the measurements to ensure accuracy.
  • Choice of probe options.
  • Displays sound velocity settings.
  • Echo strength indicator to aid measurement.
  • Calibrates to a known thickness or a known velocity of sound
  • Probe frequency selectable.
  • Low battery warning.
  • Metric / Imperial switchable.
