Reasons for the Saf-T-Climb®
Fall Prevention System

By North Safety Products

Why Saf-T-Climb Rigid Rail Fall Prevention Systems?

The Saf-T-Climb® fall prevention system by North Safety Products provides positive climbing safety for workers on any site above or below ground; straight or curved. On water tanks, chimneys, antennas, communication towers, wind generators, drilling rigs, ships' masts or any other structure Saf-T-Climb rigid rail fall prevention systems give climbers, the protection and security they need to be effective and productive. And, because the Saf-T-Climb system has over 40 years of safe climbing experience and is so easy to use, workers use it! Saf-T-Climb is frequently the specified rigid rail ladder safety device used by industry and government.

The Saf-T-Climb fall prevention system is easily retrofitted to existing ladders, or designed into new construction. Installation of a Saf-T-Climb fall prevention system means instant compliance with OSHA climbing safety regulations. Saf-T-Climb fall prevention systems are an excellent choice for quality, experience and service.

There are several different types of fall prevention systems available to you. Saf-T-Climb rigid rail systems by North Safety Products offer the best possible means of ensuring your climbers can climb safely.

Saf-T-Climb is customized for each application

Because each climbing application is unique, Saf-T-Notch Carrier Rail is offered in a variety of materials to suit your situation. Rail is cut to your specified lengths; curved if necessary, to suit your structure. A wide variety of attaching brackets is also readily available. We have the experience and the capability to ensure that each Saf-T-Climb system meets whatever special needs your job site has. Our factory reps are available to help you.

Saf-T-Climb is accepted throughout government and industry

Saf-T-Climb systems have had wide acceptance throughout government and industry for over 40 years. Safety equipment provides protection for the health and well-being of your employees. All components of the system meet Federal Specification #RR-S-001 301 (FAA) for Type 1 prevention, plus Saf-T-Climb has been specified for use by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, Coast Guard and the FAA, as well as by many state governments and agencies. Saf-T-Climb systems provide compliance with OSHA regulation 29 CFR §1910.27 for general industry and meet all ANSI standards for fall prevention systems.

Saf-T-Climb meets OSHA regulations §1910.27 and § 1926.1053

OSHA requires that all fixed ladders more than 20' long have ladder safety devices or other means of fall protection on them. With Saf-T-Climb you can satisfy these requirements by simply installing the Saf-T-Climb system on the ladder. Saf-T-Climb can be used on ladders of any length in one continuous climb.

Instant OSHA compliance with a minimum of expense and labor

OSHA also requires that ladders more that 30' long with existing cages be modified with offsetting platforms and ladders so that there are no continuous stretches of ladder over 30'. When the ladder already has a cage, you can still comply with OSHA regulations by installing the Saf-T-Climb system within the existing cage without the expense of adding off setting platforms. Saf-T-Climb systems meet all OSHA standards for ladder climbing safety. And these systems not only provide more positive fall prevention, but you can install one for much less than the cost of modifying your cage.

Saf-T-Climb makes rescue easy

When each climber uses Saf-T-Climb, many workers can climb on the same ladder at the same time with complete individual safety. It is recommended that at least one additional sleeve and belt and/or harness be available at each installation so that in an emergency the rescuer, too, will have the full protection of the Saf-T-Climb system.

Features Saf-T-Climb Fall Prevention Other Fall Prevention
Positive Stop & Lock YES - Notched rail ensures locking pawl on sleeve will engage in the notches and arrest a fall. NO - Cables & unnotched rail depend on friction, which can fail-especially if  slippery from rain, snow, ice or oil. Cages allow climber to fall as much as 30'. Climbers falling on any of these systems may be injured by ladder or cage members.
Safety Value YES - Saf-T-Notch rail attached every 6' becomes part of the ladder or structure, as rigid & secure as the structure itself. NO - Cables are flexible and unsteady along the entire length of the ladder as they are secured only at top & bottom of the climb. Cages become part of structure, but offer only a feeling of protection, instead of actual physical protection.
Ease of Use YES - Climbing in normal, relaxed manner, using legs to push climber up the ladder, instead of using arms to pull climber up the ladder, is easier and less tiring. Saf-T-Lok Sleeve rides rail smoothly; does not require manual operation either ascending or descending. NO - Cables require unnatural & fatiguing climbing position, using the arms to pull the climber up the ladder. Sleeve and cable must be manipulated during climb. Backpacks and tools get caught in cage, endangering climber's safety.
Ease of Rescue YES - Safe & easy. Both injured climber and rescuer are safely attached to the Saf-T-Climb system. No manipulation of sleeves is necessary while moving down ladder. NO-Difficult to rescue an injured climber in cage or on cable. Rescuer may have to detach injured climber from cable in order to get him or her down the ladder.
Ease of Maintenance YES - Once installed, Saf-T-Climb systems are virtually trouble-free. Require little or no maintenance. NO - Cables slacken over time-require periodic retensioning. Can deteriorate from inside with no visible signs on the outside.
Cost Effectiveness YES - Can be installed for 1/3 the cost of cages. Installed inside existing cages, eliminates need for costly retrofits to meet OSHA requirements. NO - Cages & offsetting platforms are very expensive. Require custom design,  manufacture and skilled labor for installation. Cable systems are cheap, but offer only second rate protection.

Installation Notes

Saf-T-Climb systems are easily installed on any structure. In just a few hours, two men can install 50' of Saf-T-Notch Carrier Rail. It's quick and easy to make any ladder "Fall Safe" with the Saf-T-Climb fall prevention system.

Each system comes complete with all the necessary hardware and detailed instructions for installation. A wrench and a block and tackle are normally all the additional equipment needed. The system can be installed by unskilled labor. No special expertise or certification is required to ensure that your climbers will be well protected whenever they climb.
