Ultrasonic Sound & Leak Detector
XLG-80 by Fisher Research

Pinpoints and amplifies sounds outside of human hearing range
for detection of leaks, corona, and bearing wear.

Sensing refrigerant leak in vehicle air conditioning. Sensing pinhole air leaks in a pressurized telephone line. Sensing a corona discharge at a transformer.

Description

The XLG-80 detector was designed for industrial troubleshooting applications.

1.   Pressurized Telephone Cable. Leaks from pressurized cable in the telephone industry are at such low pressure they are outside of the human hearing range. The combination of the transducer and control box of the XLG-80 converts the sound so that it is unmistakable when the ultrasonic transducer is pointed at or close to the source.
2.   Corona Discharge. Prior to visible arcing, there is an electrical discharge which sounds like vigorously frying bacon when perceived by the XLG-80.
3.   Bearing Wear. Long before vibration sounds are apparent, changes in the volume of ultrasonic sounds are an early indication of bearing failure. Steam Traps. The functioning of a steam trap including "blow-bys", "machine gunning", leakage, blockage, and oversized traps can all be determined ultrasonically without interference from other nearby sounds.
4.   Valves. Closed valves which are seated properly emit no sound. The slightest flow from a liquid or gas valve can be detected ultrasonically.
5.   Gaseous Leaks. Small air, nitrogen, helium and other non-flammable and non-toxic gas leaks are easily sensed with the XLG-80. Larger gaseous leaks are in the sonic range and can be heard easily without instrumentation. Do not use the XLG-80 for detecting flammable or toxic gas leaks.
6.   Water Leaks. Water companies and liquid leak detection professionals can make use of the XLG-80 when they add air to a water system to cause a distinct "sputtering" at the leak location. The sputtering and whistle sounds are usually in the ultrasonic range.
7.  An optional transmitter can be used with the XLG-90 or XLG-80 to sense weakened areas and pinholes in tanks.

Features

1.   Inexpensive but complete kit for ultrasonic sensing.
2.   Compact control box which can be worn on the belt, around the neck, or over the shoulder with an attachable strap.
3.  Minimum number of controls for a user-friendly control panel.
4.   Listening is loudness limited to lessen sudden blasts of uncomfortable sound.
